Drake Raps at Toronto’s OVO Fest

Drake’s fifth annual OVO Festival in Toronto, was expanded to 2 days for the first time. Night one was less about Drake and more about OVO.

The festival started off with a opening set from rising SoCal rapper YG, who hit the stage at 7:40 p.m. Wearing a bright red “Bompton” logo on his hat, he also showed Toronto some love with a Blue Jays jersey. “Toronto, you got love for the West Coast? Make some mothafuckin’ noise,” he yelled before singing “Make It Clap,” “My Hitta,” Wiz Khalifa’s “We Dem Boyz” and Jeremih’s “Don’t Tell ‘Em.”

After an only 20-minute set, anticipation was high. With the DJ hinting at the night’s show before bringing out YG, teasing, “We got a lot of surprises tonight.” Who might show up next?
It turned out to be Big Boi and Andre 3000, kicking off the night’s headlining set at 9 p.m.

The OVO crowd pumped when OutKast arrived for the hits but didn’t keep up the energy. Halfway through the downtempo “Aquemini,” Big Boi had to interject a “Toronto, y’all still with us?” just to make sure his and Andre’s rather poor performance hadn’t killed the excitement before the halfway. Luckily, “Ms. Jackson” appeared, and immediately the vibe was restored.

The 90-minute set had all the usual songs of OutKast’s other festivals this summer, but the majority of the crowd hadn’t seen OutKast at other festivals. But for those who did, they had to get their surprise from the latest on Andre 3000’s rotating lineup of jumpsuits.
