Don’t Expect Drake To Rap As Much On Views From The 6

I’ve had “Summer Sixteen” on repeat for the last few weeks, but I’m not convinced that the latest Drake single, released in late January, is a reliable indication of what his upcoming album will sound like.Noah “40” Shebib, Aubrey’s longtime production partner, has essentially confirmed as much, contrasting the upcoming project, Views from the 6, with last year’s rap-heavy release, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.

“After [2013’s] Nothing Was the Same, Drake was like, ‘I want to do a rap project,’” 40 told The New York Times. “He wanted to do what all the other rappers get to do, [but that is] a thing we can’t do that much on a Drake album. We have other fans we need to satisfy.”

Instead, it sounds like Views will more closely recall So Far Gone and Nothing Was The Same Drake, content- and sound-wise; more If You’re Reading This’ “You & 6” than its “Energy.”

“It’s going to be what everybody expects and wants from Drake and from us,” 40 added. “A lot of introspection, very vivid. He’s discovering new flows, new cadences, new patterns.

“I’m trying to find ways to pull more untraditional sounds in, to push the boundaries a little further. Something about it should be special.”
