Noah ’40’ Shebib Talks His Beginnings In Production And Becoming Drake’s Engineer (Audio)

Noah Shebib, better known as 40, has been Drake‘s right hand in the studio and the force behind his music. Avid was able to catch up with 40 in the studio where they scored an exclusive interview.

40 rarely does interviews, but when he does he always drops gems. In this interview, which contains two parts, 40 talks his beginnings in production, his process for making beats, Drake’s music being called “soft”, his influences and more.

In part one 40 breaks down what first inspired him to make his first beat, working closely with Drake, his process for making a beat and more.

On how he starts a beat:

“I always start with keys. I find melody and chord progressions first. I don’t know another rap producer that starts from chords and melody. Almost all of them I know start with drums, or a sample, or something else.”

On starting with an acapella and building a beat around:

“Because me and Drake work so closely together a lot of this is coming from him. He’ll come to me with and idea (“Hey I have this verse, I need a new beat for this song and I can’t record record this song til I get this beat. It has to say this and it has to feel like that.”) We try to achieve that and find it.”

On how he knows a song is done:

“If I can listen to the whole thing and not flinch, that’s how I know it’s done. For the most part it’s like did it bug me, did it bug me? Didn’t bug me? Okay, then done.”

In part two 40 talks recording with Jay Z, his influences, Boi-1da, and gives an in-depth look at how he uses Pro Tools. He also speaks on people calling Drake’s music soft.

“A lot of people accuse Drake for making soft music, but they should be addressing that to me. “
